Valu Plus Variety stores closing January 2011

SUMMARY

CAMDEN — Valu-Plus, a bustling variety store on Broadway will close Jan. 6.

The regional chain of 28 stores -- which includes two in Camden -- was purchased for an undisclosed sum by Rainbow Stores, Inc., a national chain of 1,100 clothing retailers based in Brooklyn.

Valu-Plus and Rainbow frequently open stores in the same shopping districts. On Broadway, they are next-door neighbors.

In a memo to employees dated Oct. 21, Goldfine said the 38-year-old discount chain was sold because it could no longer compete in the marketplace.

Liquidators have been selling off merchandise -- clothes, kitchen ware, furniture, health and beauty items -- at deep discounts since Oct. 31.

Note: Hudson Capital Partners was chosen to liquidate.
